Respiratory Health, Outdoor Air Pollution & Solid Waste Management: A Built Environment Perspective
This project examines the impact of mismanaged solid waste burning on air pollution and chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), focusing on Nakuru’s Gioto and Nairobi’s Dandora dumpsites. The initiative aims to address air quality inequities and enhance CRD care by involving local communities in developing sustainable waste management strategies that contribute to more effective urban planning.
Seed funding will support workshops and stakeholder meetings, facilitating collaboration among researchers and professionals at various career stages from partner universities. These gatherings will foster knowledge exchange and the development of joint funding proposals. By activating existing partnerships with local stakeholders, the project seeks to deepen understanding of the role of waste in CRD management and shape evidence-based policy recommendations. The ultimate goal is to leverage these lasting partnerships to drive future action-research initiatives.
